ADMINS
League has a back-end interface where admins control what sports League handles, when games are played and all scoring. For the NFL season here, the admins are the developers of League.
PLAYERS or MEMBERS
Players, also referred to as members, are those who create or join groups. To become a member, you must register and then confirm your email address via a validation link.
GROUPS
Groups are collections of members who want to compete with others in a specific League. Best example of this would be 20 friends who all want to compete against each other for the NFL season. You can join a group or build your own. Groups can be public or private. You can be a member of one or many groups however each member has only one set of picks per League. In other words, you could be in your office pool AND create your own family pool for the NFL season. Your office gang does not know what other groups you're part of and messages are never shared. So if you belong to multiple groups, you only need to make one set of picks each week. Public Groups
A public group is one where anyone can join. Any member can create a group
Private Groups
If you build your own private group, the only way others can join is by knowing your group code. To invite others to join your group, you would create the group, then email the group code to everyone in your mailing list. They register, then login and join the private group by entering the code you sent. Anyone in a group can invite someone else by clicking the Invite a friend link.
LEAGUE
A league is a collection of games for a single sport in a single season.
So our most current example would be the NFL. Each year, there are 17 weeks. That collection of games this year is called NFL-2006. The season we use each year for testing is called NFL-Preseason which lasts four weeks. Leagues are created by admins, not players.
TEAMS
After a league is created, then teams are placed into that league. In the case of NFL, we add 17 teams. Teams are added by the admin of the system, not by users.
PICKS
A pick is your prediction of the outcome of a game. You "pick" the winner and assign a point value based on the confidence of the outcome.
CONFIDENCE POINTS
For each pick, you assign a point value from 1 (for least confidence) to x where x is the number of games in the pick period. In the NFL for example, if there are 16 games in a week, then you would assign 16 points to the game you are most confident of your prediction.
PICK PERIODS
Games are grouped into pick periods, in the case of NFL, there are 17 pick periods also referred to as weeks.
Each pick period has a Open and Close date/time that controls when picks can be made. The period of time to make your picks is called the Pick Window.
During the NFL season, a typical window is open from early Tuesday until the start of the first game on Sunday. The first game in a pick period controls when the window closes. So if the first game is at 1pm on Sunday, all picks for that week must be made by then.
Point Multipliers
A point multiplier is applied to certain games that are difficult to predict the outcome. For example, if two undefeated teams are playing, we can put a multiplier of x on that game. If you put 10 points on that one, and the multiplier is 3, you can earn 30 points, not 10. Because tight games usually get the low points, this feature will encourage more risk taking, especially by those down in the standings.
Point multiplier values are based on overall pick points. e.g., We will apply these only one games where confidence is very low.
